Questions parents ask

More kids questions
What age can kids start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Children can begin Jiyu's Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program at approximately age 4. Youth programs are organized by age so instruction can match a student's developmental level.

Is Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe?

Safety is a priority. BJJ is a contact sport, so no activity is entirely risk-free, but youth classes use age-appropriate instruction, controlled practice, supervision, and clear guidance for working safely with partners.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good for shy kids?

BJJ can be a positive activity for children who are shy or building confidence. Students learn skills, work with coaches and teammates, meet challenges, and see progress at their own pace.

Can Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu help children deal with bullying?

BJJ can help children build body awareness, composure, positional control, and self-defense skills. Jiyu teaches that fighting is not the first solution. Children should communicate, create distance, seek adult help, and avoid unnecessary confrontation whenever possible.

Do kids need to be athletic to start BJJ?

No. Children do not need to be naturally athletic, coordinated, or strong before joining. Training can help develop coordination, balance, strength, body awareness, and general athletic ability.
